I Am a Little Boat

I am a little boat
floating farther and farther away
from shore
and like in dreams when I fly too high
the distance from land makes me nervous

The beach was lonely
wide and dry
and tho an echo of a voice
beckons me back
words tossed out over the ocean
drown in wind and waves

I am a little boat
Rocking
on the open sea
The coastline nothing more than memory

I knew you once, shallow waters
I hugged close to your barnacled piers
docked and tethered
creaking contently
as ripples settled in the sand beneath me
and sea foam lapped lazily at my sides

But now across deeper chasms
I drift without anchor
cut loose
No direction but outward
Onward
Anywhere without return

I am a little boat
far beyond the harbor
where even seagulls grow weary
and rest on me
